A study looked at college students in West Virginia and what kind of drinking-water/”>drinking-water-at-a-drinking-water-treatment-plant-using-uv-and-chlorine-dioxide-disinfection/”>water they drank – tap or bottled. Most students picked bottled water, mainly because they liked the taste better and felt it was safer, not because there was a real difference in water quality. Bottled water costs a lot, 1,000–3,000 times more than tap. Good news: advanced water treatment systems, like reverse osmosis, can really help with water quality problems in places like West Virginia. Here at AMPAC USA, we build commercial and industrial systems specifically for these water treatment needs, and they come with certified, proven performance.

Abstract

West Virginia has a history of water quality issues. Plus, we’re all dealing with a huge plastic pollution problem globally. To understand why people choose the water they drink, researchers surveyed students at a big university. They wanted to know what students thought about water quality and their drinking habits. A total of 4,188 students filled out the survey in Spring 2017. The results showed that about a third of students mostly drank bottled water at home. Another 39% used a filter at home, and 26% drank straight from the tap. On campus, 36% of students used bottled water, 31% used water fountains, and 29% brought their own water in reusable cups or bottles. Students’ decisions were influenced by how risky they thought the water was, how it tasted, smelled, or looked, and their concern for the environment. Interestingly, students from West Virginia were more likely to use bottled water. We think people should drink less bottled water in areas where the tap water is actually fine. We need to teach students in West Virginia more about their water quality options.
